RootsTech Ride Along: Live with Jennifer Jones » 5-Mar | “Ancestors a world away”

On this last day before the start of RootsTech, we catch up with Jennifer whose publication TrackingDowntheFamily has become a touchstone for so many of us in the genealogy community on Substack.

Each of these live sessions seems to peel back its own discoveries and “ah-ha” moments. Today’s was no exception. As we watched so many of you join the Live session,

shared that through Relatives at RootsTech, she’d just discovered a new family line that had settled a world away in America. (A special thank you , , , , , and so many of you for joining us today.)

We talked briefly about Jennifer’s own Substack,

, and the extraordinary stories she’s been sharing recently, “Letters to Bedfordshire” which follow described by Jennifer’s 2x great-grandfather as he found his way all alone in Australia. His stories have come to her through the extraordinary generosity of researcher in Britain who realized their value and made a donation of the letters to the Historical Society in Victoria. You’ll find the first in the series here:

The conversational flow took us into expectations and strategies for the upcoming RootsTech conference. Jennifer shared snippets of her strategies, focusing on the connection opportunities and keynotes available only during the live event, the Ethical Standards in Genealogy town hall, for example. She’s planned, like many of us, to flag topics for deeper study for later. Here was her post about her plan for RootsTech:

RootsTech Week is Here
The long awaited RootsTech conference is just a few days away now, and I can feel the excitement building. I’ve loved seeing the excited posts of genie friends, who are heading off to attend the largest genealogical conference in the world, held at Salt Lake City…

The flow of conversation led to a sharing of that fundamental challenge of focus. With so much work involved in genealogy research, it’s hard to find time to be creative. Our conclusion was to celebrate the unstructured time where creativity can breathe. May we all have a little time to do just that.
