Summary:

In this episode, Robin Stewart, host of "Mission: Genealogy," welcomes Dr. Mary M. Marshall, of Dr. Mary Marshall Collection, an esteemed academic and researcher whose extraordinary journey embodies resilience and inspiration. Dr. Marshall shares some of herself, the work she’s done in genealogy, some family history, and an exciting project that presented itself to her after years of searching for the missing links in one of her family lines.

She has held teaching positions at the New Jersey Institute of Technology and City College of New York (CUNY), and served as Assistant Director of both the Higher Education Program and Minority Student Affairs at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute.

Dr. Marshall’s academic credentials are just as impressive. She holds a BA in Speech Pathology and Psychology from Howard University, an MA in Reading Development from New York University, and both an MPhil and PhD in Nineteenth-Century Studies and Religion from Drew University, with a special focus on women, particularly Black women.

A tragic head-on collision led to a brain injury, resulting in dysphonia and blepharospasm, but Dr. Marshall’s determination never wavered. Despite these challenges, she continued her scholarly work, driven by her passion for research and education. Among her accomplishments is the preservation of a significant family collection of photographs, postcards, and letters, now housed at Emory University, alongside her work to safeguard a century-old Black newspaper.

In addition to her academic contributions, Dr. Marshall has been featured in an award-winning documentary and participated in interviews discussing her family's historical inheritance. Her family’s roots trace back to her 5th great-grandparents on her maternal side and 3rd great-grandparents on her paternal side, connecting her personal narrative to the broader historical legacy of Black heritage in America.
