Sharing Tips at Mission Genealogy with Deborah Carl

Today's Live video featured Deborah Carl of YourFamilyQuest as she shares her new Tips column for MissionGenealogy. It's a generous ethos where we help each other with shared challenges.

Thank you

, , and so many others joining us on this Substack Live today. It was sweet of you to take the time to join us!

We all came into this knowing that Genealogy is a team sport. We capture the stories of our ancestors to share with our families and our descendants. Along the way, though, we rely on each other as fellow family historians and genealogists to get the most of our tools, learn best practices, and learn how to tell stories. Here at

we’ve created a clubhouse where we can help each other along in Substack and gather as community in roundtables.

This new Tips series,

of YourFamilyQuest is heading up is no different, and I was delighted to welcome her today to Substack Live to talk a little about the tips series and how all of you as members might join in on the fun.

Sharing Tips at Mission Genealogy

If you want to start or improve your genealogy publication on Substack, this is where you want to be — Mission: Genealogy. Here you’ll connect with other genealogy Substack writers in a supportive community of genealogists at various skill levels. Many of those members are willing to share what they’ve learned while researching and while writing on Substack.

Following her lead, our first contributed post will be from

of TrackingDownTheFamily. Stay tuned for her tip.

🗝️ Notice that each contributed post will be shared with the

community as an emailed post introducing your name and work to new audiences. You’re always welcome to cross-post your tip published on Mission: Genealogy as a way to share it with your own readers.

Deborah’s work in producing this Tips series started when she noticed how other Substack genealogists seemed to be unaware of the marvelous footnoting feature. That led her to create a whole section of tips on her YourFamilyQuest publication.

And Deborah’s not the only one.

of has also just released a series of tips centered on screen-recorded videos. I can be so much easier to see how something is done when you watch them do it, right?

What’s that thing called?

During our conversation, we talked about a few of those made up words we use in genealogy:

  • Genearosity: A moment of genealogical generosity

  • Joynealogy: That moment of joy when you share the fun of genealogy with someone who knew nothing of how it worked.1

Know more of these or have a tip to contribute for Deborah to share in her column? Reach out via email:

This particular nugget also came from Jennifer Jones who submitted it after our live session based on the incredible work of Jill Ball in Australia who maintains the WordPress site Geneadictionary where you’ll find many more tasty morsels. Enjoy.
