Roundtable Discussions as Community Check-ins
A casual gathering welcoming everyone in the family history and genealogy community. We check-in with each other on project work, inspiration, and new resources. Join us?
A Community Requires Connection
From the start, Robin and I wanted our Mission: Genealogy clubhouse to create a safe space for Trust, Kindness, and Candor. The very personal nature of family stories and genealogy can reveal vulnerabilities. Sharing ideas and business models can invite competitiveness and misunderstandings. We wanted to be sure we had a way for our community members to get to know — and trust — one another. Open dialogues and online resources can be a start, but short of international travel, live video calls had to be part of our programming.
Our solution is to add Roundtable discussions to the mix. Once a month, on the third or fourth Tuesday of the month, we’ll host roundtable discussions that will not—in principle—be recorded. We’ll use Zoom with our cameras on to go around the room, get to know each other and talk about our challenges, plans, and perhaps even some collaborations.
Our next Roundtable
During 2024, our Roundtable sessions are scheduled for the convenience of our Atlantic neighbors at 10 AM PT, 1 PM ET, 6 PM BST, 19:00 CET. Please register on the calendar here 👇
Starting in January 2025, we’ll be experimenting with a new format that will combine Roundtable and Office Hours sessions with two meetings a month, one each for Pacific and Atlantic communities. Have suggestions?
One of the fascinating tidbits of insight from this first session was insights about genealogy across the globe. Since many of us in the anglophone world have ancestors from the UK and Europe, the connections are personal. We’ve discussed this as something we can expand on in future roundtables.
Our open house participants from Sweden (lovely to see you,
) to Australia (g’day, , up in the wee hours of the morning.) As many of you know, for , we’ve routinely scheduled programs to benefit the Pacific region at 4 PM PT, 7 PM ET, 9 AM AEST, 7 AM AWST, and 12 AM BST and will likely expand programming this way, too. Have some thoughts about that?I hope you can join us for this event or a future event.
While we expect to make friends in our Mission: Genealogy clubhouse, these friendships are hard to sustain and support without at least the human connections of live video calls. I hope you can join us.
For our next Roundtable meeting on September 24
⮕ I've popped a new thread in the Member Chat section. Let's start the discussion there: open.substack.com/chat/posts/2c46a790-5366-4bce-996a-c1fe36fd1864
⮕ Register for the session at MissionGenealogy.org/next-roundtable (I hope to keep that updated with the registration page for the next meeting each month)
Barbara, I tried to Register for the October 22 session of Roundtable but it was linked to the September 24 session and gave the message that I cannot register for the meeting since it has ended.
